Marketing Your Practice in this Economic Downturn

Despite a lousy economy, it’s nice to see “leading edge” accounting firms acquire new business systematically, almost like there was no economic downturn at all.  In fact, it’s great to see small accounting firms stick to their marketing plans and fight thru this economic storm like it did not exist.

At the same time, I have heard from some firms that pulled in the reins last summer and are now struggling with high client attrition rates in certain industry sectors (e.g., real estate, construction, manufacturing, etc.).  In fact, I received a long email from a client earlier this month who pulled the plug on marketing last summer and is now trying to cry on my shoulder about how his practice had too many construction clients…blah…blah.  And because the practice declined so quickly, he can’t really sell the practice for a fair price either.  In response, he got some tough love from me back within the hour about how his marketing expense reductions cut into the bone and did not trim any fat.  Much to my surprise, he agreed.

A Digital Version of a Blast from the Past!

Back in the “olden days,” before most professionals learned to quit playing the silly game, it was an annual spring tradition for some idiot journalist somewhere to decide to “test” tax practitioners and publish the results under the guise of helpful consumer information. They’d deliver a pre-determined set of information to different tax preparers and then compare the resultant returns.

The information was always incomplete or questionable in some way and the “game” usually disallowed follow-up questions from the preparer. The published story was almost always flawed in the “tax analysis” area and trained professionals would wince at the simplistic explanations offered for truly complex situations. Eventually the idiot journalists (please forgive my obvious redundancy) ran out of victims and I have not seen the story in many years. Until today.

Document Management - A Changing Landscape

Technology Tools and Strategies for The Progressive Accountant
By Brian Tankersley
Technology should always be used to a competitive advantage and in alignment with your business goals. That will be the theme whenever you see me write, and that’s the idea behind this column on Document Management. Many of you think you are using document management, and at some level we all are. However, if you look around your home or office while reading this, and realize that you have paper everywhere, or worse yet, have disorganized electronic storage, you may have a problem. The United States Will Be Just Fine

There is probably something in humans and in every generation that makes us think that the problems we face are uniquely difficult.  Much has been written about the economy and, if you accept certain assumptions from what you read, you might think that we are in the midst of a global depression.  Yet, it is important to put the current economy in perspective.  We might even try reviewing and analyzing some objective data.

Will Your Clients Want to Talk About IRAs Soon?

As I write this post I’m watching cable news and trying to understand the fact that the Dow dropped nearly 800 points today -- and knowing that, as practicing tax and accounting professionals, we’ll be asked about this a LOT, and SOON, and OFTEN. And our clients (the askers) will be scared, and angry.

The IRA has been around since the 1960s and, although it was pretty simple at introduction, it’s anything BUT today. So, with nervous clients and trillions of dollars involved it just might be a good time to make sure we know what we’re talking about.

Don't Quit Your Day Job

The guys at Real Time Bookkeeping have produced a video -- and they asked me to share it with you. Well, okay, RTB, but I have some advice -- "Don't quit your day jobs!"

In all fairness I must confess that I actually chuckled a bit (and winced) while watching it. You may enjoy a bit of it. It runs 2:35 (IMHO that's just about 2:05 too long).

For those of you who aren't familiar with Rob Chandler's www.RealTimeBookkeeping.com offering, let me assure you that their service is MUCH, MUCH better than their musical talents!! Read more...
