NSA Urges Delay on eFilng Regs
ALEXANDRIA, Va. -- The National Society of Accountants is urging the Internal Revenue Service to delay e-filing regulations for paid tax preparers for a year. The regulations, which took effect this month, mandate that preparers who file at least 100 returns must using electronic filing this year. The NSA made its statements last week in testimony before the IRS.
John Ams, the NSA's EVP, testified that preparers could not comply with rules that were effective on January 1 since the rules have not been issued. Written testimony from NSA President Donny Woods said that some taxpayers, particularly the elderly, are still not comfortable with the internet and do not want returns e-filed. The association also said that asking preparers to submit hardship waivers for returns would disrupt the filing season and its testimony continued that many preparers have had difficulty obtaining a Preparer Tax Identification Number as required under the regulations.
The American Institute of CPAs, which also testified last week, asked the IRS to double the return threshold to 200, and asked for requirements to be phased in over three years but did not ask for that requirement to be delayed.
