Fox stopped from watching the hen house. On January 18th a federal court permanently enjoined the IRS from regulating tax preparers. It is about time the IRS was stopped from this misdirection of their mission. As the tax code continually gets more complicated the IRS should not be seeking to regulate tax preparers. Instead the IRS should be seeking to simplify the tax code and finding easier ways to explain taxes to taxpayers. Taxpayers have a right to understand the tax code. Taxes are one of their largest expenses. Taxpayers should be able to intelligently manage them. The government is responsible for creating the excessively complicated tax code and the government benefits when taxpayers over pay their taxes out of fear and confusion. Our elected representatives should be helping the taxpayer to save money not scaring them into paying too much taxes. It is shameful for CPAs to support the IRS's efforts to regulate tax preparers because it reduces the CPAs competition. Instead CPAs should be focused on helping tax preparers: understand the tax code, implement new technology, and make a profit while benefiting society through the triple bottom line.
