Georgia Preparer Gets 137 Months

A Georgia tax preparer has been sentenced to 137 months in prison after begin convicted of conspiracy and filing fraudulent tax returns. Tyrone Thompson was the last of five defendants in the case to be sentenced. He was also ordered to pay $516,363 in restitution to the IRS.

Republic, Jackson Hewitt to Arbitrate Dispute

An arbitrator will hear arguments this summer about Jackson Hewitt Tax Service's termination of its contract with Republic Bank & Trust. Jackson Hewitt ended the agreement because Republic could no longer provide Refund Anticipation Loans to its customers. Liberty Tax Service also cancelled its pact for the same reason but is not involved in litigation with the Louisville, Ky.-based bank.
CCH Sold CompleteTax to Liberty

CCH has gotten out of the consumer tax software with the sale of its CompleteTax product to franchisor Liberty Tax Service. The change was effective in December when the product, once known as CompleteTax, went on the market as eSmart Tax by Liberty Tax. The companies have had a relationship regarding tax software since Liberty contracted to use CCH software while it prepared its next generation product.
