The Internal Revenue Service had received 77,795,000 returns for the reported period of this tax season, an increase of .4 percent over 77,475,000 for the corresponding a year earlier. The IRS processed 75,307,000 for the same period, up .1 percent from 75,208,000 for last year through March 31.
Total efiled returns of 72,732,000 to date this year represented a rise of .7 percent over 72,205,000. For this year, paid preparers have submitted 38,245,000 efiles, a decrease of 8 percent from 38,548,000 a year ago. There were 34,487,000 self-prepared efiles for this season, up 2.5 percent, 33,657,000.
On the refund side, 61,739,000 have been issued for the reported period, down 1.2 percent from 62,494,000 in last year’s comparable period. The number of dollars in refunds, however, was only down .2 percent.
