Attorney Sentenced in Bogus Filings

dojA Bronx, N.Y.-based attorney has been sentenced to two years in prison for filing thousands of bogus tax returns. William Doonan was found to have claimed more than $6 million in bogus deductions for clients of his tax return business.

Doonan, 69 years old, had operated his tax preparation business under the name William Doonan Esq., preparing between 3,000 and 5,000 federal tax returns annually from 2010 through 2013.

Thousands of returns reported phony consulting businesses, business losses and a wide variety of fake deductions. The fabricated and inflated items on those returns caused the government to lose $1.8 million in taxes.

He must serve one year of supervised release, pay $65,820 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service along with a fine of $10,000. Doonan pleaded guilty in November 2016 to aiding and assisting in the preparation of a false tax return and obstructing and impeding the due administration of internal revenue laws.
