Preparer Jailed for Civil Contempt

irsA Tennessee preparer has been jailed after spending money on gambling, a Lexus and home furnishings instead of paying $25,000 in fees to the United States. Kevin Williams of Memphis was jailed after surrendering voluntarily after a court issued an arrest warrant on July 21.

Williams and his wife, Stephanie Edmond, and their businesses, The Tax Firm and TaxFactory, were barred from the business on April 4. The court at that time ordered they turn over to the U.S. all fees they earned from preparing returns since January 21.

However, the court found he continued to pay his preparers and gave his step-daughter $33,000.

Edmond was also found in contempt, but the court found she lacked financial resources to pay the government. She was ordered to find a job in 90 days and begin paying the government $25,000 in monthly installments of $500 or be jailed.
