Minnesota: Don't Use Intuit Tax Software

Intuit logoThe Minnesota Department of Revenue has warned state taxpayers not to use any of Intuit's tax products for filing returns. The statement issued this weekend applied to paper and efiled returns and covers Intuit's TurboTax, Intuit Online, Lacerte and ProSeries software packages because of issues Intuit had discovered that could affect the accuracy of the returns.

The Minnesota Department issued a statement that  "The Department of Revenue is not affiliated with Intuit and we find these errors unacceptable. We expect Intuit to correct these problems immediately. If they fail to do so, the department will stop processing returns filed using Intuit." It also conducted a conference call with preparers about the issue.

An Intuit employee published a response on the Intuit Community web page that "We're making good progress and anticipate that all Intuit MN tax product issues will be fixed and pushed live by Monday, March 11, 2013". The statement also recommended that preparers waited until Tuesday, March 12, "as this will help ensure a smooth experience."

However, with the Minnesota statement broadcast or published in most of the state media, one preparer complained he was losing customers. There are published reports that 10,000 returns have been affected.

A Minnesota press release did not specify what the errors were. But it said those who have not prepared or flied returns should use a package from the approved state list of software publishers Those who have prepared or not filed returns should wait for Intuit to fix the problems, it said. For taxpayers who have filed returns, the Department published a toll-free Intuit telephone number.

However, preparers on the Intuit Community listed a number of errors. One reported the following that she said rephrased the Minnesota department's complaints:  "Problems with State Election Campaign Fund selections, Educational subtraction (Form M1M), Property Refund calculation (Form M1PR), Property Tax direct deposit election (Form M1PR), Child and Dependent Care Credit (Form M1CD), Marriage Credit (Form M1MA), S-Corp Form M8X, Corporate Form (M4A), Fiduciary Schedule KF, and Fiduciary Schedule carryforward."
