A Cloudy Year for Accounting Software

The technology press likes to declare something a "Year of ..." whatever the hottest trend is. But evidence is building that 2012 is going to be a big year for the sale of accounting applications that run on the web. Now, as is usually the case, there are usually a few big years once a new technology catches on.

At the same time there is no reason to think that practitioners are going to leap to web-based tax preparation and. other typical tax and accounting office applications remain wedded to the desktop.

But the switch in the accounting software market is important because virtually every accounting firm's clients use some kind of financial software and as the size of the clients grow, the more likely it appears the switch from desktop to the cloud is going to occur.

Once clients embrace a technology, accountants need to know something about it. There's evidence from the channel recruiting by companies such as NetSuite and Intacct that firms are making this effort. For those who don't, the changing technology landscape is going to require some changes in thinking.
