The new CEO worked for six years in IT and finance management jobs at Sprint before joining the tax preparation franchising company in September 2002. Among his roles there were director-level positions in IT management and tax strategy and development before assuming his VP role at Block in August 2009.

Red Gear Gets Block Exec As President
SALT LAKE CITY - RedGear Technologies, which markets the TaxWorks tax preparation software line, has named Chip Coons as its new president and CEO. Coons, an executive with RedGear's owner H&R Block, replaced David Wayne Bates, son of company's late founder Wayne Bates, who remains as senior vice president.
Coons, a former U.S. Navy officer was most recently assistant vice president with H&R Block, which acquire TaxWorks early in 2007. The company name was changed to RedGear as parent of all the operations tax and accounting line while it maintained the TaxWorks name for its tax preparation line.
