ETAAC: eSignature Needed for Employment Forms

irsThe ability to use electronic signatures on employment forms is critical to the Internal Revenue Service reaching electronic filing goals, the Electronic Tax Administration Advisory Committee said in its annual report to Congress. ETAAC noted the IRS has a goal of having 80 percent of all major return categories electronically Filed. However, the employment taxes, the Form 94x Series, reached only an estimated 37.2 percent this year.

The Form 94x level compares to an estimated 86.6 percent for individual tax returns in 2016 which were efiled. The committee noted the IRS plans improvements that could include removing efiling barriers, but that depends on budget and staff availability. The most recent statistics show 19.4 million employment forms filed via paper returns with with 11,360,800 efiled.

The average for all categores is 78 percent but  only individual returns have met the IRS 80-percent goal. The next closest, partnership returns, (1065/1065-B), reached an estimated 78.9 percent with 3,081,500 returns efiled. The next highest level is for fiduciary returns (Form 1041) with 2,419,100 efiled representing 74.1 percent of the total in that category.

Following closely behind that was the rate or corporate taxes (1120/1120-A, 1020-S) were 5,170,300 efiled returns estimated at 74.1 percent of all corporate returns filed. Further back, is the smaller category, exempt organization returns (Forms 990, 990-EZ). There were 355,500 efiled this year, 58.1 percent of all such returns
