Paychex Likes Start of Kashoo Effort

Martin Mucci, Paychex Paychex says it is getting lots of interest in the low-cost accounting package it is marketing. But comments during the recent earnings webcast suggested the payroll services company still has not ironed out the details of how to get small businesses to sign up for the Kashoo-based cloud product in great numbers.

"We are doing pretty good at driving activity in," CEO Martin Mucci said. But he added the secret is "how to you get them to register and sign up." Overall, Mucci expressed happiness with the experience so far and noted it is still very early for Paychex to talk about the degree of success with the privately labeled program.

Mucci said Paychex is working with Kashoo and will be rolling out "additional enhancements", although those and their scheduled availability were not discussed during the earnings webcast for the third quarter ended February 28.

Web-based use was also a subject of analysts' questions about the reception for Paychex traditional payroll services and the cloud based ones. Mucci said customers are often opting for a mix. "We are seeing many more online clients, but they are then using their service person when they need to," he said. SaaS applications are proving very popular in the "micro enterprise space," Mucci said, continuing that its SurePayroll subsidiary "plays very effectively there."

For the third quarter, Paychex reported good earnings with the bottom line at $160.1 million, up 10.8 percent from last year's corresponding period. Revenue for the most recently ended quarter was $636.5 million, a 7.3-percent increase compared to $593.3 million a year earlier. As has been typical of the company's results for some time, payroll services revenue was up 5 percent while human resource service revenue rose by 12 percent.
