Mobile Apps for Accounting Professionals

Mobile imageSmartphones offer the ability to browse the Internet and access email, but there are countless applications (apps) available for the mobile practitioner to increase productivity, bank, conduct meetings, network, and travel. As Apple's marketing says, “There's an App for that.”

So Thomson Reuters has provided this list of suggested mobile applications, including some manufactured by the company and all available via its CheckPoint platform.  These include some popular apps available that may help increase productivity or at the very least provide entertainment.

Productivity Apps

Everyone wants to be more organized and productive. There are many apps available that will help you keep on track and increase your productivity, including the following:

•  LogMeIn —LogMeIn is a web-based remote access service that allows you to remotely control a Mac or PC from your mobile device. You can remotely control your computer and email yourself a file you left behind or perform a quick task on your office computer.

•  Evernote — Evernote is a service that syncs your notes across a wide variety of different computers and devices. It lets you take notes, capture photos, and create to-do lists that are searchable from work or on the go. Some useful ways to use Evernote include taking meeting notes, snapping photos of whiteboards, or saving web pages from your desktop and viewing them later on your mobile device.

•  Scanner Pro — Scanner Pro transforms your iPhone and iPad into portable scanners. It allows you to take pictures of receipts, whiteboards, paper notes or any multi-page document and convert them to scanned documents. The scanned documents can then be emailed and printed; uploaded to Dropbox, Google Drive, and Evernote; or simply saved on your iPhone or iPad.

•  DropBox — Dropbox lets you save all your photos, PowerPoint presentations, spreadsheets and videos anywhere and share them easily. Access any file you save to your Dropbox from all your computers, iPhone, iPad, and even the Dropbox website. It offers file storage, sharing, and management for your company's important documents. When you save a file to Dropbox, it saves it to your computers, phones and any other devices.

•  SmartVault —More and more accountants are moving to paperless environments. SmartVault offers Web-based document management services that integrate with QuickBooks. In turn, the free SmartVault app gives you access to your documents from anywhere, including your iPhone, iPad, or Android device.

•  Mobile CS Thomson Reuters — Mobile CS provides access to important firm, staff and client data. The information automatically flows directly into Practice CS. Key features include checking staff availability, viewing financials, looking for “clients near me,” tracking mileage, tracking receipts, and timing outgoing iPhone calls.

•  Thomson Reuters ProView —  ProView enables users to access reference materials from Thomson Reuters, Westlaw, Carswell and Sweet & Maxwell. To begin viewing a purchased eBook version of your reference material, simply download the ProView application to your iPad, Android tablet, or computer (not available on iPhone).

Communication Apps

There are numerous apps that will help you stay connected. Apps like the following keep you from missing important meetings, keep you connected with your staff or customers, and market your services:

•  WebEx — Running late for an online meeting? WebEx allows you to schedule, attend, and host meetings with anyone, anywhere. The app allows you to share files and information and collaborate with everyone connected to your business.

•  Bump — Bump is a networking app that allows you to trade contact information, photos, and files by “bumping” two smartphones or iPads together. You can then synch the information with your computer.

•  Twitter — Twitter is not just for following celebrities, it can also be a great way to keep up with your staff and market your services.

Banking Apps

Many major banks, including Bank of America, Chase, and Wells Fargo, have free mobile apps that allow their customers to check bank balances, make payments, and find their bank's nearest ATM. For example:

•  Chase Bank — Chase's Mobile app is available to all customers who are enrolled in Chase Online. You can view account balances, review transaction history, pay bills, and transfer money between Chase users. Chase QuickDeposit allows you to take a photo of the front and back of your check and then deposit it into your Chase account. It also offers a “FindATM/Branch” feature using your GPS location.

•  Mint — Mint allows you to see all your financial information in one place. It automatically updates and categorizes your information and suggests ways to help you save.

•  E*TRADE Mobile — If you have an E*TRADE account, Mobile Pro allows you to get real-time quotes with charts, breaking market news and commentary, and access to watchlist and portfolios saved on the E*TRADE website. You can also transfer money from most financial institutions to your E*TRADE account using Mobile Pro.

Travel Apps

Travel can be stressful with issues such as flight delays and lodging issues, but there are apps like the following to address most travel problems, including hotel finders, airport guides and airline apps:

•  iFly and iFly Pro — iFly helps you navigate over 700 airports with GPS-enabled in-terminal maps. It can also show you which restaurants are closest to your gate and where to locate wi-fi. With iFly Pro, you can keep track of flight delays and integrate with TripIt.

•  TripIt — TripIt can help you keep your full itinerary organized and in one place, from flight e-tickets to car reservations. TripIt also includes maps and directions, and it will also keep track of all the confirmation emails you get from hotels and airlines.

•  Free Wi-Fi Finder — Most apps rely on an Internet connection. This app helps you find an Internet connection so that you can stay connected without racking up roaming charges by locating Internet hotspots in your vicinity
