The number of Free File online returns submitted this year reached more than 4.1 million, a 50-percent increase over the total in 2019, the Internal Revenue Service said this week. The IRS also reported that 96 percent of those seeking an Economic Impact Payment, used the Last year, there were more than 2.7 million such returns. Taxpayers have until October 15 to file returns for tax year 2019.
According to the IRS, more than 7 million non-filers have registered for EIPs with more than 6.7 million using the free tool. The Non-Filers tool, available on the IRS.gov, remains available through November 21 for those non-filers who have not yet registered.
