Louisiana Preparer Defied Court Ban

A Louisiana preparer has pleaded guilty to four counts of preparing fraudulent tax returns. Shawanda Nevers, 49, pleaded guilty to filing bogus returns between 2011 and 2016 even though a court banned her from preparing federal returns in 2014. She owes the Internal Revenue Service almost $7 million.

Nevers aka Shawanda Hawkins, Shawanda Bryant and Shawanda Johnson, operated several businesses in the LaPlace, La., area, including 3LJ's Café Services & Sports Bar and 3LJ's Industrial Service Solutions.

She pleaded guilty to utilizing business losses and deductions and tax credits to which her clients were not entitled. Nevers admitted owing $6,934,764 in restitution to the IRS along with $128,900 to the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Trust and $964 to the Social Security Administration

Nevers faces a statutory maximum sentence of three years in prison on each count, as well as a period of supervised release, restitution and monetary penalties.
