Louisiana Preparer Draws 57-month Sentence

dojA Monroe, La.-based tax preparer, Richard Allen Scott, has been sentenced to 57 months in prison for filing more than 50 false tax returns. Scott, age 38, used a variety of techniques to reduce taxes owed by more than $338,380, which he has been order to pay back. He must also serve one year of supervised release.

Scott was convicted in a jury trial in September of multiple counts of aiding or subscribing a false tax return. The jury needed 90 minutes to reach its verdict. Evidence showed that Scott prepared the returns for tax years 2011 and 2012, utilizing phony W-2 withholdings, dependent care expenses and tax credits.
