Avalara Buys Telecom Tax Company

Tim Lopatofsky, EZtaxAvalara has acquired EZtax, which makes tax compliance products for the telecommunications inudstry. The company's software, which bears the same name, calculates and files taxes due on such services in the United States and Canada. Terms were not disclosed.

The move was the latest by Bainbridge Island, Wash.-based Avalara to purchase companies that make specialized indirect tax applications. In March, the sales and use tax vendor bought Hotspot, which made tax applications for the vacation rental industry. ETax was founded by CEO Tim Lopatofsky.

The trend is gaining strength among software vendors addressing this market with Sovos Compliance having acquired ShipCompliant, which makes applications for the beverage alcohol market, in April.

Sovos also recently acquired Imaging Science and Services, which markets document management solutions for regulated industries. It is best known for its Teams system, which helps manage sales and use exemption and resale certificates for retailers, manufacturers and other businesses
