Feds Ask Court to Halt Tax Prep Family

Daniel and Shirley Toyos Almazan, tax preparersThe United States is seeking to force companies run by a Miami, Fla., man and his two daughters and a son-in-law, out of the tax preparation business. The government is seeking an injunction to stop Lazaro Jesus Toyos from preparing federal tax returns for others. The effort also applies to his daughters, Dilma Toyos Garcia and Shirley Ester Almazan and Shirley's husband, Daniel Almazan.

The injunction being sought would also apply to their companies L. Toyos Tax Service, Toyos Garcia Tax Service, Toyos Tax Service Inc. and Total Income Tax Services. The government said the losses from the 17,000 tax returns they have prepared since 2008 could range into the millions.

Lazaro Toyos became a preparer in 1979 and was followed into the business by the family members. The U.S. alleges a variety of abuses including business loses for phony businesses and claiming the First Time Homebuyer and American Opportunity Credits for clients who were not qualified for them.
