Detroit Preparer Guilty on 10 Counts

dojA Detroit, Mich.-based tax preparer, Matthew Bender, has been convicted of one county of obstructing the Internal Revenue Service and of nine counts of aiding and assisting in the preparation of false federal income tax returns. Bender failed to report more than $500,000 in fees he earned for preparing at least 3,000 returns between 2006 and 2011.

Bender filed false returns in 2007 and 2008 and failed to file at all from 2003 through 2006 and in 2009 through 2011. He also used bogus deductions to boost the amount of client returns. Bender remains in custody pending sentencing and faces a maximum of three years in prison and a fine of $250,000 on each of the 10 counts.
