U.S. Seeks to Shutter Texas Preparer

justiceThe United States has asked a federal court that Melissa Alvarez, a Texas tax preparer, be prohibited from preparing federal income tax returns for others. The Department of Justice alleges that of the tax returns examined that were prepared by Alvarez and her three companies, 97 percent had refunds that were inflated Alvarez's actions.

Based in McAllen, Texas, Alvarez also operates Best & Unique Income Services, Best & Unique Income Tax Melissa and Best & Unique Income Tax Services LLC. The departure wants an injunction to apply to all three businesses.

The Internal Revenue Service examined returns Alvarez prepared from the 2004 through 2012 tax season. Most had problems such as improper use of the earned income tax credit and other tax credits, along with the use of inflated or phony deductions.
