I just returned from the Thought Leaders Symposium in Dallas. Much to my surprise and glee the discussion among the vendors and leaders was all about the the relevance gap in the profession. A pre-session survey among the leaders indicated that 60% of us agreed that relevance is the most important issue facing the profession. Jim Metzler of the AICPA acknowledged the "re-start" on this important issue. It was known 20 years ago. It was important 10 years ago. It is now mission critical. Author Geoffrey Moore recently released a white paper on the subject: This is a must read for everyone in the profession. He breaks the future down into these three steps: Digitalization, Virtualization, and Transformational. Most firms are still so busy going paperless and getting in the cloud, they are missing out on the only step that adds real value to relationships; transformational. These steps are not necessarily sequential. This three legged stool requires equal focus in all these areas. Those who want to live up to the moniker of TBA already know this.
