Shutdown of Texas Preparer Sought

/department-of-justice-logoThe United States has sued tax preparer Joseph Rivas of DeSoto, Texas, alleging that returns he prepared may have defrauded the government of more than $7.8 million. The action seeks to bar Rivas from preparing federal tax returns for others.

A civil suit alleges that Rivas claimed fraudulent deductions and expenses on his customers' tax returns. These included fake mortgage interest deductions, illegally deducted Social Security tax as state and local taxes and fabricated employee business expenses. The Justice Department wants Rivas ordered to provide a list of all persons for whom he has prepared returns since Jan. 1, 2010.
