Modernized EFile Shut Down

The Internal Revenue System shut down the Modernized EFile system yesterday, January 17, on the first day of efiling. The official reason was that the IRS needed to tune the system. It was supposed to be back in operation today, but that had not happened as of this morning, according to a post on a Drake Software blog.

According to the blog posting, the IRS asked transmitters to stop transmitting about 4:30pm, with the IRS taking the MEF system down at 6pm on Tuesday. The blog entry said many returns transmitted yesterday have not been acknowledged and a backlog was building. While the older efiling system is operation, the blog said the IRS would not provide permission for using that for any significant volume. The blog posting by Jamie Stiles said if measuring from drain times said the old system produced acknowledgments faster.
