These positions will be open in more than 250 locations and are part of what the IRS says is "a larger effort to add fairness to the tax system and expand tax enforcement involving areas of concern with high-income earners, partnerships, large corporations, and promoters."
Funding for the positions is provided under the Inflation Reduction Act funding approved in August 2022.
In a prepared statement, Commissioner Danny Werfel said the IRS' first wave of hiring under the law was to improve telephone and in-person assistance. The next wave aims to reverse a decade-long decline of audits of the wealthy.
