 Preparer Sentenced to Three Years

Justice hammer scalesFlorida tax preparer Thomas Johnson has been sentenced to three years in prison for his role in preparing more than 1,000 fraudulent returns. Johnson has also been ordered to pay $1,688,931.90 to the Internal Revenue Service.

Johnson, who pleaded guilty on October 30, operated a tax preparation business in Seffner, Fla. From 2015 through 2017, Johnson used undeserved education credits clients were supposedly owned and Schedule C losses for businesses his clients denied having.

These actions were often concealed by Johnson’s listing other preparers for most of the returns he created and filed. He also required clients to split large refunds with him.
