Tax Season Starts January 23

Football KickoffThis year’s tax season will begin on January 23, the Internal Revenue Service said this week. The filing deadline is April 18.

January 23 is the first day the IRS will begin processing filed returns. The deadline is extended through April 18 because April 15 falls on a weekend and the Emancipation Day holiday is on Monday, April 17.

The IRS expects more than 168 million individual tax returns will be filed. The agency believes its service will improve this year because of the hiring of 5,000 individuals to answer telephones and the addition more in-person staff.

“With these new additional resources, taxpayers and tax professionals will see improvements in many areas of the agency this year,” acting IRS commissioner Doug O'Donnell said in a prepared statement.
