Returns Slip Further from 2021

The number of returns submitted for the tax season have continue to fall further behind 2021.The total number of returns received by the Internal Revenue Sevice through March 18 were down 5.1 percent from the season through March 19, 2021.

The difference continue to be the decline in self-prepared efiles which were down 7,1 percent from last year’s corresponding period, which resulted of a total drop in efiles of four percent 

Tbere were 69,852,000 submitted for 2022 as reported, compared to 72,730,000 in last year’s corresponding period. The number of efiles fell to 69,852,000 from 72,730,000.

Self-prepared efiles declined to 35,457,000 from 35,457,000. The number of efiles submitted by paid preparers dropped to 34,395,000, down a half percent from 34,566,000.

The average refund issued by the IRS rose to $3,305, a 12 percent from $2,292.
