The Internal Revenue Service said recently that during the summer taxpayers can electronically file Form 1040-X for the first time. Once the capability is available only 2019 Forms 1040 and 1040-SR returns can be amended electronically.
About 3 million 1040-Xes are filed each year. Taxpayers will still be able to use the "Where's My Amended Return?" online tool to check the status of their electronically-filed 1040-X.
Taxpayers can still file paper forms. Additional enhancements are planned for the future.
