Thomson Commits $100M to Tech Center

Jim Smith, Thomson ReutersThe year-old Thomson Reuters Technology Center will be expanded, the company said this week. Thomson says the Toronto, Ont.-based center will have a new facility constructed. Thomson expects to commit more than $100 million through capital investments and a 12-year lease.

The company expects to occupy the building at 19 Duncan Street in Toronto's Entertainment District early in 2012. It will accommodate as many as 1,500 employees.

The new site will be located at Duncan House (19 Duncan Street) in Toronto's Entertainment District and will accommodate up to 1,500 employees. Thomson Reuters is expected to assume occupancy in early 2021.

"Once fully staffed, the Centre will house one of Canada's largest technology hubs dedicated to developing the next generation of products and capabilities for our global customers," Thomson CEO Jim Smith said in a prepared statement.

The Centre has been temporarily located in Bremner Tower and focuses on using cloud computing, big data analytics and machine learning (AI)

The site, the former Southam Press Building, is at the corner of Adelaide Street West and Duncan Street. Duncan House will be 10-story LEED Gold office building integrated with the building's historic structure.
