Intuit Issues May Delay Some Minnesota Refunds

minnesota revenueThe Minnesota Department of Revenue yesterday issued a list of problems found with Intuit tax software and what is being doing to correct them. This followed Intuit's announcement it had made available fixes to solve problems with its software that caused the department to warn state residents not to use any of Intuit's four tax packages to prepare and file returns, either via paper or electronically. The state warned that three out of 13 issues might cause delays in refunds.

Minnesota had warned taxpayers not to use TurboTax, Intuit Tax Online, ProSeries or Lacerte. Minnesota did not announce whether the update had worked, only that it had been released. In four cases, Intuit will provide the state with a list for correcting errors for those who have already filed electronically. The list indicates that with other problems, Intuit had advised taxpayers electronically before the update was issued.

Among the problems were the following:

Child and Dependent Care Credit (M1CD) - The last name of the care provider was blended with the first name. Minnesota advised it would review returns and follow up if necessary.

State Election Campaign Fund Selection (Form M1 and M1PR) - If $5 was directed to a political party or to the state's general campaign
fund, Intuit did not accurately communicate your choice to the department. The state said this did not apply to returns completed after February 28. Intuit will probably a list to Minnesota for those who filed electronically and were sent a letter with instructions.

Negative Federal Adjusted Gross Income (Form M1) - Turbo Tax and ProSeries issue - When the Federal Adjusted Gross Income was a negative number, the value submitted to the department. Intuit was preparing a list and the department said some who received a bill or letter should follow instructions.

Property Tax Form refund calculation error (Form M1PR) - Lacerte issue - Some homeowners and mobile home owners with
household income over $16,000 and property tax over $3,500 are calculating a refund larger than the taxpayer is entitled to. This did not affect returns prepared after March 11.  The instructions were the same as for the problem with adjusted gross income.

Fiduciary Form (KF) - ProSeries issue - There are calculation errors. On composite Income Tax Smart Worksheet, the total amount is wrong resulting in the fiduciary tax liability to be overstated and an overpayment by the fiduciary. Those who filed returns before March 11 need to file an amended return. The March 11 update was to address this issue for those who have not.
