Sentencing has been scheduled for October 30.
Georgia Preparer Faces 17 Years in Fraud Case
A tax return preparer from Macon, Ga., faces up to 17 years in prison and a fine of $500,000 after pleading guilty to charges involving phony tax returns. Willie C. Grant admitted to using former clients' names - many of them elderly or deceased - and Social Security numbers to file returns without their knowledge.
Grant pleaded guilty to filing a false claim for tax refund, theft of government money and aggravated identity theft. When preparing the returns, Grant had the IRS electronically deposit refunds into his personal and business account and also received paper Treasury checks. He spent the proceeds on items such as expensive cars and personal living expenses.
