Retirement Funds Boost ADP Exec Pay

Gary ButlerExecutives at Automatic Data Processing did not receive bonuses for the year ended June 30. But a jump in two retirement funds produced decent increases in total compensation. In the case of CEO Gary Butler, his pay for 2010 rose by 16.2 percent as his pension and deferred compensation plans saw a 60.3 percent increase in value for the year.

Like the other executives, Butler received no bonus and his $1 million base pay remained unchanged from 2009. But his overall compensation reached $9.12 million, up from $7.85 million the prior year. That was helped out by the retirement funds, whose value rose to $2.76 million for the most recently ended year, up from $1.722 million for fiscal 2009. Similarly, CFO Christopher Reidy saw no bonus or increase in his $365,000 annual base salary. However, his 2010 compensation of $2.01 million represented an increase of percent 18.2 percent from $1.7 million a year earlier. His total was boosted by the $303,301 from the retirement funds which was 116.3 percent higher than the $140,253 received in 2009.

In the case of both Reidy and Butler, their total compensation rose despite the drop in value of stock and option awards received for fiscal 2010. Butler received $3.16 million from those two sources in the last fiscal year, compared to $3.64 million in 2009. Both benefited from increases in the non-equity incentive compensation plan, as did three division presidents who also saw their retirement funds increase sharply. Butler got $2.02 million from that category last year, up 56 percent from $1.3 million the prior year. Reidy's take from the non-equity plan was $557,900 in 2010, up 61 percent from $346,600 in 2009.

Division president Regina Lee received $2.21 million in total compensation in 2010, compared to $1.34 million in 2009. Another division president, Carlos Rodriguez, had $2.07 million in total pay in the most recently ended fiscal year, which was an increase from $1.29 million for fiscal 2009. A third division president, Campbell Langdon, received $1.98 million in fiscal 2010. During the year, his position was eliminated and his duties placed under Lee.
