M&P Gets More RSM Profits and More Expense

McGladrey & Pullen will pick up two more percentage points in the profits of RSM McGladrey, but it also agreed to start paying for more of the expenses as a result of the new operating agreement between the two firms. The results were spelled out this week by C.E. Andrews, president of RSM McGladrey, during the third quarter Webcast of the unit's parent H&R Block, who said most of the terms go into effect on May 1.

Block Revs Drop as Number of Tax Returns Fall

H&R Block got through the first weeks of tax season with a drop in business as it reported a 6.2 percent decline in revenue, but a 5 percent rise in net income for the third quarter ended January 31. The company said the revenue drop reflected a 7.1 percent decline in retail tax returns prepared and it had lost two percentage points in market share in selling digital products. Its business operations sector, RSM McGladrey, fared better with a 3.6 percent drop in revenue for the same quarter.

Thomson CS Suite SaaS Pricing Marks Radical Change

Thomson Reuters has spelled out the pricing for its SaaS for the CS Professional Suite this past week at a strategic update at the Dexter, Mich., headquarters of the unit that markets products such as UltraTax and WriteUp CS. IRS Bars Attorney Who Blamed Late Filing on Sick Mother

WASHINGTON - Kevin Kilduff, a Massachusetts tax attorney, has been barred from practicing before the Internal Revenue Service for a minimum of 48 months for failing to file one federal tax return and for filing another five returns late. Kilduff, who once worked for the IRS Office of Chief Counsel, had blamed his late filings on his need to take care of his sick mother.

CCH Customer Tax Spending Nearly Doubles

CCH has been able to get its tax and accounting customers to nearly double their spending on the company's predicts over the last three years. Thomson Reorg Signals Expansion in the Americas

Thomson Says Checkpoint Revenues Boom

In a year in which its chief competitor, CCH,  launched a new research platform, Thomson Reuters said its own Checkpoint system had its best month of sales in the product's history. That came as Thomson Reuters reported revenue for its tax and accounting business rose by 9 percent while the unit's operating profit dropped by one percent for the year ended Dec. 31, 2009.

Liberty Tax Sees Rise in Returns

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - While its major competitor, H&R Block, was reporting a drop in the number of tax returns filed, Liberty Tax Service said it had a 10.2 percent increase in the number of tax returns filed as of February 15 and a 28.1 percent increase in revenue. That was accompanied by a 3 percent increase  in returns for same store sales and a 21.2 percent increase in revenue. That came after Block reported a 6.5 percent decrease in returns the same day.

CCH Small Firm Services Consolidates Operations

CCH Small Firm Services, whose locations incorporate the facilities of the ATX and TaxWise lines before their purchase by CCH, has decided to consolidate operations in a new headquarters in Kennesaw, Ga. More than 600 employees working in four sites in three states are being offered the chance to work at the new location, which is scheduled to open in the September quarter.

Block Prepared Tax Returns Drop

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – H&R Block saw a 6.3 percent drop in the number of tax returns prepared through February as total returns prepared year-to-date fell 8.2 percent and average retail fee per tax return prepared increased by 1.8 percent. Meanwhile, returns prepared online or via Block's desktop software dropped by 1.8 percent from the prior year.

Intuit's Sees Drop in Sale of Pro Tax Packages

The number of professional tax units sold by Intuit, which markets the Lacerte and ProSeries software packages, dropped for the second straight year, falling to 95,000 for the second quarter ended January 31, down from 97,000 a year earlier and 98,000 for the same quarter in 2007. Meanwhile revenue for those product lines dropped to $124 million for the most recently ended quarter, down $133 million a year earlier.
