Intuit Online Payroll is a very streamlined and easy to use product, and is in fact, the easiest to use of all of the products reviewed. Pricing is at $9.95 per month, including direct deposit, and current promotions give new users the first six months free. The navigation in the product is similar to Intuit's QuickBooks financial software, and users of this popular general ledger package will find that Intuit Online Payroll does a great job of calculating simple payrolls. Not surprisingly, the package also interfaces with QuickBooks and business editions of Intuit's popular Quicken personal financial software.
Figure 9 - The home page for Intuit Online Payroll. The simplicity of the product comes with some limitations, however. Intuit Online Payroll does not support outsourced tax filing, workers compensation calculations, complex payroll calculations, job costing, payments to contractors, and does not provide role-based security to assist with segregation of duties. The product also does not support payroll tax forms in many states. Finally, the website warns that performance may suffer if the total number of employees who are paid in a year exceeds 100. Accordingly, users may want to consider a different service if those limitations are not acceptable.

Document Management Expands Its ReachNot too long ago, there were not only separate applications for electronic tax filing, there were separate companies selling those products. A little further back, tax preparers had to pay separately for laser printing functionality for their tax software. So how much sense does it make to have separate applications with document management, workflow and client Internet portals when the use of documents is common to all the products?
