MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - A continuing explosion in the sale of desktop versions of TurboTax fueled a 10-percent growth in the number of units of the tax preparation software sold by Intuit through March 13. The number of Web units sold rose by 20 percent over the same point in tax season 2009 as sales of desktop units dropped by 2 percent.

Intuit, whose products have been taking share from chains like H&R Block, reported the sale of just over 9 million Web units, up from 7.52 million a year ago. Sales of desktop units fell to 5.27 million, down from 5.37 million, as users continue to move from desktop software to the Internet.
