I believe that by what was reported is a bad thing. A normal person could do their own tax return if they did not fear the IRS. Company's and big tax prepares make the public think how bad it is for them to do it. It is multi million dollars industry so they want to shrink the pie so nobody can earn extra money doing tax returns. I been doing tax returns for 18 years and learn from my uncle who was a CPA. Te IRS use to call him for his thoughts on tax law. If we want to fix the problem we must first fix the IRS. You can call the IRS on a question 5 times and you will get 5 different answers. So why do we have to be so right about something when the IRS cannot give the same answer. The courses that are offer and classes each year for tax returns do not help either. I attended many. First of all the cost has gone from $65 dollars for a one day event to a 2 day event that will run close to $400 when you count travel and time lost at work. Second of all spending a day on tax court rulings is ok if it is useful. 98% of most clients it never fall into those examples....being a register tax prepare is a good thing and learning the new changes is ok but not mandatory. If lawyers, cpa and enrolled agents do not have to test each year or take course than why the person who just does returns. I worked for the big company's who do are taxes. Most of their prepares can only do simple returns ..why because that what most are. A CPA firm their accountants do not do returns unless it for a big client. the simple ones are passed down to a young account and the client is charged outrageous cost. I get down off my soap box..i do returns because i enjoy helping people and only charge to cover my expense and to make a few dollars. If you ask most tax prepares does the normal person get the same breaks as the big company's they say no..but the true answer is yes..just have to know how to ask the right question
