In-memory databases are still relatively new for middle-market software applications. But products utilizing them have proved to be highly successful for enterprise-level software companies such as SAP and Oracle.

Harris said tests of the Intacct technology showed the in-memory database can age 1 million customer invoices in four seconds and analyze 20 million sales orders in 45 seconds.

With the limited release, a subset of customers will be asked to take an early adopter role and provide feedback to the company. Harris said that "It's hard to say when that broad deployment will happen", although he'd like to see that occur in the first half of next year.

The company demonstrated an analytics application running on top of in-memory database. Such tools provide a substantial improvement in speed because it is far quicker to access data in computer memory than on disk storage. Some vendor claims about improved calculation speeds have been that they produce astronomically faster performance.

Harris said that the in-memory database and analytics tool will be built and deployed together. Asked if such products will be more expensive, he replied, "I can't say there won't be an additional charge. It will be much more affordable than if they were to tattempt to try this project on their own."
