Rick Richardson's 2013 Technology Predictions

Dana Each year, Dana "Rick" Richardson produces a list of technology predictions both for the near future and for the long term. This year's list, as  usual, has been presented at conferences such as the American Institute of CPA's Tech Plus  and those of some state CPA societies.

Here's are Richardson's latest predictions in succinct form.

Software

1. Digital Identity Management will become increasingly important to both organizations and individuals as new software allows users to better manage their multiple identities across business and personal networks. Next Generation Biometrics integrated into your smartphone and tablet will play a key role in both identity management and security.

Hardware

1. Within 24 months, your next computer will live on your arm.

2. Within 18 months, Apple will release its iWatch.

3. Tablet computer sales will overtake notebooks by 2015.

4. Within the next twelve months, HP will restructure, spinning off the PC and printer businesses in a last-ditch effort to be like IBM.

5. The next big market disruption will be in the form of smart TVs. These devices, integrated with existing mobile ecosystems, could be the battleground for the next big compute revolution. As such, smart TVs' ability to become another platform component will likely mean significant investment from Apple, Microsoft, Google, Samsung and others. We should see first units before 2015.

Communications

1. Google buys Pandora within two years.

2. By 2015, Yahoo makes a comeback going "all in" on mobile.

3. Within three years, more than 60 percent of new American-built cars will include features such as built-in Internet and smartphone connectivity.

4. 2014 will be the year of the "Internet of Things". With Wi-Fi, Near-Field Communications and Bluetooth, ordinary household and personal items will become connected to the wider world. Jewelry will change color with the weather and glasses will show what time it is.

5. Issues and legalities over cloud data sovereignty will come to a head in 2013-2014 when the EU will have to go back to the drawing board on new data protection proposals.
