Mobile Launches from Big Players Proliferate

Mobile is in the air as major tax and accounting companies this month introduced products and services in the rapidly expanding market for applications that run on mobile devices. The players with new entries are Sage, Thomson Reuters, Paychex and Intuit.


Sage North America has launched a mobile app for the Sage Accountants NetWork, SAN Mobile Connect, a smartphone app to give members access to Sage product, community and industry news. The app is available for iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and Windows 7 phones.

In the tax research arena, Thomson Reuters has released mobile versions of Thomson Reuters Checkpoint, its research platform. The company says that Checkpoint has been optimized to reduce navigation clicks and to display screens in an easy-to-read manner on Apple's iPad and smartphones such as iPhone and Google's Android.

Mobile versions do not require downloading of an app. They automatically detect user log-ins and deliver the phone or tablet user interface accordingly. The version for tablets features drop-down menus to navigate Checkpoint and icons to navigate within document preview windows and has displays that support rotation between portrait and landscape orientations.

Smartphone uses can search by citation, table of contents or WG&L dictionary of tax terms and can access news articles. They are able to view folders, save documents to folders, and flag, email and make notes to documents.

Paychex is in the field with a smartphone application for iPhone, Android and BlackBerry devices that enable users to access Paychex payroll and benefits data. Paychex Mobile can connect to a customized dashboard of favorite tasks that include employer and employee-focused features.

Among employee features are a contact list with email and call capabilities employee check stubs and W-2 Forms, time-off balances and retirement balances, loans, and contributions. FSA balances and reimbursements are also viewable.

Accountants can also utilize the app to generate client reports such as Payroll Journal and Cash Requirements reports

Use the application requires a Paychex Single Sign-On account. Once a user is registered, the same username and password that is used for smartphone access can be used on a laptop, PC, or tablet. If the employer has a Single Sign-On account, an employee ca use the smartphone app with a username and password provided by the their payroll administrator.Paychex Mobile can be downloaded for free.

Intuit rolled out two new mobile packages. The Mobile Purchase Rewards feature from Intuit Financial Services' new feature for mobile devices enables customers to receive and activate customized merchant-funded discounts or rewards that are based on their personal buying habits. They can swipe ATM or debit cards to redeem offers. The company also introduced mobile support with QuickBooks Point of Sale 2013 by integrating GoPayment, Intuit's mobile payment processing application, with the POS product.
