I finally gave up and requested a refund. I tracked down another number through Google and spoke to someone in accounting. They said they were giving refunds within 2-3 days. I asked how many customers they had and she said 4000. I have used the program for at least 5 years now with no issues. So depressing to have to acquire a new program and learn it at this stage of the game. Read more...

Tax Preparer Regulation

I have been preparing tax returns since 1982 with no problems for my clients. I have a Master Science Degree in Taxation, but some think that I am not qualified to prepare taxes????!!!!! Just because I chose not to follow the crowd with a LLM or CPA, I should not be penalized. If you test me, you should test EVERYONE who prepares taxes. I know many lawyers and CPA's that wouldn't know a 1040 from a 1041 - taxation simply isn't a requirement in their fields. Their resources would be better spent seeking out those who erroneously and continuously prepare false returns. Read more...

Hello, I feel very strongly about Tax Return Preparers being required to take CPE courses annually and to take, and pass, the RTRP exam. This is a very complicated, detail oriented proffession. If an individual cannot pass these tests, or cannot afford to take them, maybe they should be in another line of work. Our knowledge should far exceed that of the individual coming to us for tax preparation and financial advice. Read more...

If "tax preparers" haven't previously taken SOME form of CPE, then shame on them! With the new "limited" representation rules under the RTRP certification, just create "category 4" (along with CPA's, EA's & Attorney's) and proceed as originally planned. Let "Mom & Pop" continue to call themselves "tax preparers" when they're not busy running their "Convenience Store" and let their "ignorant clients" (who are trying to save a dollar), suffer the consequences! I believe IRS should require at least continuing education for tax preparers. So, that everyone be up to date with current and future regulations. As of far as fees, don't have any problem with them. Read more...

Block sues Intuit

I am a CPA in Indiana and worked for Intuit Turbo Tax last tax season as a "Ask a Tax Professional". All of the tax professionals are either CPAs, Enrolled IRS agents or Tax attorneys. The software asks you many questions. It will ask more questions depending on your answers. It is thorough and relatively easy. Turbo Tax and H&R Block are both leaders in the tax software and services industry. I would rather see them just advertise what they are offering and not put fear into taxpayers about using the other. Read more...

RTRP Requirements

I support the regulation of tax preparers but feel that in the case of California it is overkill. California tax preparers must maintain a surety bond as well as complete requisite hours in continuing education each year. If the RTRP injunction is overurturned we will be required to not only meet the standards set forth by the California Tax Education Council but the IRS as well. If California waived its requirement and acted in conformity with the IRS regulations I would be in complete support of this legislation. As it stands, it is nothing more than an additional expense. Intuit lies in the ads about someone preparing your taxes. You have to do it yourself and it is very confusing. I ended up having to take my return to a H&R Block professional after I wasted my money at Intuit. It comes down to you get what you pay for in the long run! Read more...

IRS regulations for Tax Preparers

While I did not like the regulation of RTRP Exam requirement initially, I think it is a good idea to ensure only competent people prepare the tax returns. I have passed the test. I studied a lot and was very confident of passing it befoe going to the test center and I did. Test allows 2.2 hours and I finished it in 1.5 hour; that was possible because I studied hard to avoid failure. I have learned lot from the study I did. Read more...
