IRS logoWASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today has proposed tax preparers pay a $50 fee each to the IRS to cover technology costs and the cost of compliance and outreach efforts, in order to receive Preparer Tax Identification Numbers. There will also be a smaller fee paid to a third party that will be chosen to operate an online application system.

The fees are part of a new regulations being faced by paid preparers. The IRS expects the fee paid to the system operator would be substantially lower than $50 and the amount is expected to be announced soon, along with details about the launch of the online system. Tax professionals and other interested parties have until August 23 to submit comments regarding the proposed regulations.
