IRS Warns of Fake Advocate Calls

The Internal Revenue Service has reported scammers are making calls impersonating the the Taxpayer Advocate Service. The agency said this week the latest variation of the scam spoofs the telephone numbers of the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service offices in Houston, Texas, or Brooklyn, N.Y.

Some contacts are made via robo-calls. Taxpayers returning these calls are requested to provide personal information, such as Social Security or individual taxpayer identification numbers. Other scammers demand immediate payment of taxes by a prepaid debit card or wire transfer and are often hostile and abusive.

The IRS said TAS does not initiate calls to taxpayers “out of the blue” but only reaches out after it has been approached for help.
