The Some contacts are made via robo-calls. Taxpayers returning these calls are requested to provide personal information, such as Social Security or individual taxpayer identification numbers. Other scammers demand immediate payment of taxes by a prepaid debit card or wire transfer and are often hostile and abusive.
The IRS said TAS does not initiate calls to taxpayers “out of the blue” but only reaches out after it has been approached for help.
