Ex-Cop Guilty Of Embezzlement, Tax Fraud

doJA former police sergeant has pleaded guilty to embezzling funds from the accounts of disabled veterans. Glenn P. Pearson, 61, who served on the police force in Whitman, Mass., also admitted to preparing phony returns for his tax preparation clients that cost the government more than $1.5 million.

Pearson was named a fiduciary for disabled veterans by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. From 2007 through 2012, he fulfilled that role for eight disabled veterans, but used his position to steal more than $250,000 in V.A.-issued funds from their accounts.

Starting in 2012, he operated FTS Tax Services where he utilized false credits and fictions deductions to boost clients’ refunds. When the Internal Revenue Service audited his clients’ returns he made false statement and forged documents for his clients to submit to the IRS.

With sentencing scheduled for September 19, Pearson faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison for wire fraud, five years for misappropriation of funds by a fiduciary, three years in prison for preparing false tax returns, and three years in prison for attempting to interfere with the administration of internal revenue laws.

He has agreed to make restitution to the veterans, the VA and the IRS.  Pearson also faces a period of supervisory release and monetary penalties.
