There were 85,251,000 returns filed for the latest period reported by the Internal Revenue service, compared to 82,787,000 for the season through March 25, 2016.
The season did not break the pattern for e-filings with self-prepared efiles coming in at a better pace than those professionally prepared. But both improved over the March 17 report. The 35,730,000 self-prepared efiles were off 2.6 percent from 36,687,000 the prior year.
