New Tax Software Scam Circulating

irsScammers are impersonating software providers in the latest scam aimed at procuring information from tax professionals. The Internal Revenue Service and state agencies are warning of an email that claims preparer software accounts have been suspended.

The phishing email continas  the subject "Access Locked" and informs receipiens their tax prep software accounts has been "suspended due to errors in your security details." They are then instructed to utilize a link in the email that is purported to unlock the email.

Those clicking on the link are taken to a fake web page where they are asked to enter their user names and passwords. If they do so, they provide this information to criminals who utilize  stolen credentials to access preparer accounts in order to steal client information.

Authorities urge preparers to forward these emails to tax software providers. This can be done by saving the message as text to the user's desktop. This can than be forwarded to the software vendor. It is also recommended a copy be sent to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
