The findings are based on a Google Consumer Survey conducted by IDT911 of more than 1,500 consumers in the United States, aged 18 and over. IDT911 markets applications to help consumers deal with data breached and ID theft.
The survey also found that 19 percent have not ensured their Wi-Fi network is password protected if they are filing from home. Only 12 percent plan to file in January, although experts believe filing early beats potential identity thieves to the punch.
Thirty-eight percent say they do not know how to vet a taxpayers credibility while that rose to 92 percent for those aged 18 to 34.
In terms of their view of the riskiest time for ID theft, 48 percent said that is the holiday shopping season while 30 percent cited tax filing season.
