Wolters Kluwer Buys Indirect Tax Specialist

Karen Abramson, Wolters Kluwer Tax & Accounting Wolters Kluwer Tax & Accounting is expanding its presence in the indirect tax market with the acquisition of SureTax. Founded in 2011, Alpharetta, Ga.-based SureTax specializes in the telecommunications and corporate markets. Indirect tax, which is emerging as a global battle ground among software providers, is the kind of high-growth area in which Wolters Kluwers invests.

"The primary focus to be able to serve our telecom clients and the telecom industry in a stronger and better way," says Karen Abramson, CEO of the Wolters Kluwer division. The company will probably look at the use of SureTax as an engine for some of its other indirect tax products.

SureTax has seven employees and was founded by Mike Sanders, who remains with the company.

The indirect tax market has seen increasing merger and acquisition activity. That has come from Avalara and the recent formed Sovos Compliance, which have been buying specialized tax products and companies. Avalara has declared it will continue to expand via such acquisitions.

Wolters Kluwer has been visible at events, such as Microsoft's Convergence conference, in exhibiting its indirect tax products. Other entries its line are Sales Tax Rates and Decisions Administration Reporting, Sales Tax Research & Compliance Manager and CCH Sales Tax Office.
