IRS Tests Walk-in Help

John Koskinen, IRS CommissionerThe Internal Revenue Service has begun testing walk-in taxpayer help at 10 of its larger Tax Assistance Centers. The IRS wants to determine if appointment-based service can reduce waiting times at the offices that it indicates have lengthened because of budget cuts.

Help is now provided on a first come-first served basis. The agency said that means taxpayers have to wait in long times, sometimes for more than an hour.

"My hope is that this test increases the level of customer service that we can provide while minimizing needless burden on taxpayers," says IRS Commissioner John Koskinen.

The test begins on February 23 in the following cities: Atlanta, Ga. (Atlanta-Woodstock); Austin, Texas; Birmingham, Ala.; Chicago, Ill. (Dearborn); Denver, Colo.; Fresno, Calif.; Hartford, Conn.; Plantation, Fla.; San Antonio, Texas; and Seattle, Wash.
