Through March 28, the IRS said it had received 82 million efiled returns and 8.3 paper return. It expects the season total for paper will be 23 million returns, compared to 25 million for the 2013 tax season.
Meanwhile, the totals through March 28 continue to show fewer professionally prepared returns have been filed, compared to last year, although the gap has narrowed. There have been 48.8 million professionally efiled returns this year, compared to 49.2 million through March 29, 2103. There have been 33.7 million self-prepared returns efiled, an increase at 5.9 percent over 31.8 million a year ago.
The total number of returns filed this year is up only slightly over the 2013 totals. For the period reported, there have been 90.8 million received, an increase of six-tenths of one percent over 90.2 million a year ago.
