U.S. Wants to Bid Aloha to Preparer

justiceThe United States has taken action in a federal court in Honolulu, Hawaii, to stop James A. Ericson from preparing tax returns for others. The complaint alleges that Ericson, said to have prepared more than 1,000 returns a year, created phony businesses and inflated credits and deductions on clients' returns.

Ericson, who operated in Maui, Hawaii, may have cost the government as much as $31 million in lost tax revenue for tax years 2007 through 2012, the Justice Department alleged.

The preparer was accused of such practices as deducting costs stemming from clients' hobbies.

A web search shows Ericson was based in Kahului, on the island of Maui, Hawaii. However, a website associated with his name and address is no longer active. The Better Business Bureau website shows that two complaints were filed against the business in 2012, but that organization received no response from Ericson.
